Tuskeegee Motel and Convenience Store
in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina
Located on Hwy 28 (Moonshiner 28), only 3 miles to Fontana Lake,
18 miles to Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap,
23 miles to Cherohala Skyway, and 12 miles to Robbinsville.
We also have several car events during the spring and summer months each year which bring many car groups, clubs, and car specific organizations to the area. It is always a fun filled week having many car enthusiasts from the Mini-Cooper Groups (MOTD), Zdayz, and The Miata’s (MATG) which are 3 of the best known though there are many others throughout the summer. Be sure to check the event calendar for the area to see who may be visiting the area at specific times.
The early months of the year is when many through-hikers visit the area making their way North on the Appalachian Trail. Extending from Georgia to Maine, the AT is hiked in part, or in its entirety, by thousands of hikers each year. We are located near 3 trail heads where the AT crosses easily accessible paved roadways. These areas are frequented by many day hikers, as well as through hikers who are beginning, ending, or just stopping for a rest during their journey.
As the area is mostly National Park and US Forest Service property, it is very remote. Many people prefer staying with us to get away from everything and detach for a few days from the hectic hustle and bustle of life. We are located in the county in a very country atmosphere. Our customers are mostly dedicated riders/drivers who leave early, ride all day, return in the evening to rest and refresh and do it all again tomorrow. Staying true to our roots from the era of the 1960’s there are no phones in the rooms, parking is available in front of each room, and the motel has a covered porch for our guests to talk and socialize.
Having been in operation for over 50 seasons, we have an extensive following of customers and friends. We will gladly refer you to another facility if we are booked out so you may enjoy the area even if we are unable to accommodate you. If you call for a certain date or event and we are already at capacity we will usually have a list of who has available accommodations remaining readily available.
Our convenience store has Sausage Biscuits, Croissants, Gravy & Biscuits in the mornings and BBQ Sandwiches, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Pizza, Hand Dipped Ice Cream the remainder of the day. The store also stocks various grocery items and serves as the office for the motel. During the motel season the store is open 8 AM – 9 PM EST for the convenience of our guests. Our normal season of operation is April – October each year.
Effective January 1, 2017 our fuel service has ceased. Due to excessive costs associated with the fuel system, it has become no longer possible for us to provide this service. Be assured we are extremely disappointed in the situation, The convenience store and motel will continue in the tradition we always have with all items we sell, services we offer, and hospitality we are known for.

Tuskeegee Motel and Convenience Store is a privately owned, held, and operated business. The Motel and Convenience Store are private (membership only) and we reserve the right to limit retail transactions, lodging requests and all business operations to our registered and approved members. We do accept requests for membership on a continual basis and encourage the public to inquire. However, based on our previous customer base and extensive relationship over the past 50+ seasons with individuals and groups who have patronized our business, first priority in transactions, reservations, and all operations are given to our approved and registered members. Please feel free to inquire as we continually add to our membership as needed. These steps are necessary and prudent for maintaining the normal operations of the business. Full, open operations with the public can cause situations which are detrimental to the normal operating and functionality of our establishment. This diminishes the customer experience and hinders our ability to provide the level of service we have become known for. In an effort to preserve the atmosphere and environment our customers and patrons have come to expect, this measure was necessary, prudent, and much needed. In a nutshell, we are not changing, and are actively taking steps to preserve the experience we provide to our current guest as well as like minded and similar-interest persons who will contribute to the experience rather than take away from it. Thanks for your understanding.
